The question I'm going to be discussing today: What things should I or my child should write down prior to seeing a professional for the first time?

I see this as a question not of either/or but more of are there things that will be important to you to make sure you do discuss with a professional to see if this professional can be of help to you.  If you are thinking about seeing a professional, I expect that you and your children are suffering from the effects or the causes of divorce; meaning that things have been going wrong for a while, it's affecting how you are getting through your day and/or it's affecting how your children are functioning.  So, you want to write down the things that are coming up to mind over and over again, things that are bugging you.  If you make a note of these things, take the notebook with you to see the professional for the first time.  You'll be able to open that up and look at that, even though during the meeting, you might not be feeling ready to discuss them, you'll have them available if you are ready.  Also, sometimes when we are feeling stressed out about something, it's hard for us to talk about it coherently or clearly.  So, if you have those things written out, you'll be able to review your notes and simply even read what is in the notes to the therapist so that they can be of assistance to you. 

If your children are of an age where they can begin writing out some notes, give them a notebook and tell them to write out things that are bugging them to take to see the therapist for the first time as well.  Your children will then have their own little list of things that they want to talk about that might not be in anybody else's agenda.  Children of divorce suffer and struggle through many issues that we as parents may not be ready to discuss or even think about for them, as you yourself will be struggling with your own issues.

La pregunta de hoy es: ¿Hay cosas que yo, o mis hijos, debemos anotar antes de ver a un profesional por primera vez?

Esto es muy buena pregunta. Claro que estar preparado antes de la terapia de divorcio es más eficaz, aunque muchas veces el terapeuta te va a preguntar ese tipo de situaciones, o ese tipo de áreas a todas, las metas, pero es bueno estar preparado antes de la sesión. Anota cómo te ha sentido - tu sistema de apoyo, tu dieta, tus hábitos de ejercicio.

También, anota ¿qué es lo que quieres que suceda ahora y en adelante con tus hijos y contigo mismo o misma? Si nunca has ido a terapia, te recomiendo que preguntes de qué se trata y cuánto durará porque hay terapeutas que recomiendan verte semanalmente, hay terapeutas que recomiendan dos veces al mes, dependiendo de tus necesidades.

El divorcio en los niños es más complicado y estresante. Ellos tienen a culparse por el divorcio de sus padres. Es confuso y preocupante para ellos, entonces aquí te recomiendo que sus preguntas sean guiadas por ti. Tú los puedes ayudar a que ellos formulan qué es lo que va a suceder en terapia y también, bueno, formular las preguntas acerca del divorcio. Como, por ejemplo, puede ser "¿Qué pasa cuando mis padres se divorcian?" "¿Qué pasa cuando tengo dos casas?" "¿Cuál va a ser el itinerario?" "¿Cómo lo voy a hacer con la escuela?" "¿Voy a tener ropa en las dos casas?" "¿Cómo vamos a intercambiar ese tiempo?" "¿Qué pasará con mis amigos, mis vecinos, etc.?"

Es probable que también el terapeuta recomiende grupos de apoyo para ti o para tus hijos.
